Joe Biden to meet Pope Francis in Rome ahead of G20 and COP26.

US President Joe Biden has arrived in Rome for an audience with Pope Francis ahead of the G20 summit of world leaders and after that the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.

Pope Francis and Joe Biden will discuss tackling COVID-19, climate change and poverty in talks which are a chance for the US president to set the tone for a crucial week.

Joe Biden, only the second Catholic President of the USA after John F Kennedy, spoke of the moment’s significance last month.

“I happen to be a practicing Catholic and one of the things I like about my pope today is he’s all about renewal and forgiveness, that’s what that’s what he’s about.

And I look forward to, I hope I get to see him in the not-too-distant future,” Joe Biden said in September.

The coming two weeks of global leaders meeting to save the world begins with a one-on-one between the leader of the planet’s biggest religious denomination and its most powerful superpower…

The G20 Summit will take place 30 and 31 October in Rome.

The United Kingdom will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021.

Pope Francis prays for peace with faith leaders: ‘Demilitarize our hearts!’

Pope Francis attends an International Meeting for Peace with leaders of various religions and confessions at Rome’s Colosseum, and urges everyone to work toward purifying our hearts so that peace might fill our world.

The St. Egidio Community has held a two-day peace meeting in Rome which was attended by numerous faith leaders from across the globe.

The 35th International Meeting for Peace concluded on Thursday evening with a prayer for peace at the Colosseum, which was attended by Pope Francis.

Held under the theme, “Peoples as Brothers, Future Earth“, the event saw the participation of religious leaders from Christianity, Islam, Hebraism, Buddhism, Tenrikyo, Hinduism, and Sikhism.

Participants from over 40 countries met to discuss how to “start again” in the “Spirit of Assisi”, which is one of friendship and dialogue.

Pope Francis wrapped up the Prayer for Peace meeting at the Colosseum which was attended by hundreds of people from various faith traditions.

Ahead of a moment of silence for the victims of all wars, the Pope offered the concluding address for the event, asking God to “demilitarize the human heart.”

He said the urgent task of religions is “in this delicate historical situation: to demilitarize the human heart.”

“As believers it is our responsibility to help eradicate hatred from human hearts and to condemn every form of violence,” he said, according Vatican News.

Pope Francis to G20: “peace is a universal right”.

Pope Francis sends a message to participants in the G20 Interfaith Forum, and urges religious leaders to pursue peace for all peoples and to serve truth.

The G20 Interfaith Forum runs from 12-14 September in the Italian city of Bologna, and is meant to promote healing from the Covid-19 pandemic and the many conflicts lacerating the world.

Religious leaders taking part in the annual event seek to engage with the agenda of the G20, a forum for international economic cooperation amongst the world’s 20 largest economies.

Pope Francis sent his greetings to participants in the Interfaith Forum on Saturday evening.

Pope Francis praised the forum’s goal of sharing ideas and hopes through interfaith dialogue and the promotion of religious freedom.

He said the role of religions is essential in overcoming war and hatred, since “true religion consists in adoring God and loving our neighbor.”

“More than putting something on display, we are called to show the fatherly presence of the Heavenly God through our harmony on earth,” he said, according Vatican News.

President of Guinea, Alpha Condé, detained by soldiers on Sunday.

Members of Guinea‘s armed forces announced a takeover of the government and the closure of the country’s borders.

The army unit announced on Sunday that it had seized power in the West African country of Guinea, ousting 83-year-old president Alpha Condé, and imposing an indefinite curfew.

International organizations including the African Union and the United Nations have condemned the move and called for respect for the rule of law.

“I strongly condemn any takeover of the government by force of the gun and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde,” the UN secretary-general António Guterres tweeted.

President Alpha Conde was sworn in for a third term last December after a disputed election.

He initially came to power in 2010 in the country’s first democratic election since its independence from France.

Many saw his presidency as an opportunity for a fresh start for the nation.

Pope Francis calls for prayer, fasting for Afghanistan.

At the Angelus, Pope Francis calls Christians to show solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, especially women and children, the victims of violent attacks in recent days.

“Let us continue to assist those in need“, he says, “and pray that dialogue and solidarity may lead to peaceful and fraternal coexistence.”

In a statement by Pope Francis:

“I am following the situation in Afghanistan with great concern,” Pope Francis said on Sunday, adding, “I share in the suffering of those who mourn for the people who lost their lives in the suicide attacks last Thursday, and of those who are seeking help and protection.”

Almost two hundred people were killed in the suicide bombing at Kabul’s airport last week, and thousands of people are still waiting desperately to flee to the country as the Taliban takes control of the war-torn nation.  

The Holy Father commended the souls of those who were killed “to the mercy of Almighty God.”

At the same time, he thanked those who are working to help the “sorely tried population” of Afghanistan, especially women and children.

“I ask everyone to continue to assist those in need,” the Pope said, “and to pray that dialogue and solidarity may lead to the establishment of peaceful and fraternal coexistence, and offer hope for the future of the country.”

Pope Francis insisted that “in historical moments like this we cannot remained indifferent,” and for Christians it is a duty to respond.

For this reason, he said, “I appeal to everyone to intensify prayer and practise fasting: prayer and fasting, prayer and penance.

Now is the time to do it.”

Adding emphasis to his appeal, he continued, “I’m serious: intensify prayer and practice fasting, asking the Lord for mercy and forgiveness”, according Vatican News.

Pope Francis in hospital for in Rome for intestinal surgery.

Pope Francis went to a Rome hospital in Italy on Sunday for scheduled surgery on his large intestine, the Vatican said.

The news came just three hours after Francis had cheerfully greeted the public in St. Peter’s Square and told them he will go to Hungary and Slovakia in September.

Spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope, 84, was due to undergo the surgery later on Sunday for an intestinal condition that tends to affect older people and can cause abdominal pain.

The brief announcement from the Holy See‘s press office didn’t say exactly when the surgery would be performed but said there would be an announcement when the surgery is complete.

It is the pope’s first known treatment in hospital since he was elected to the papacy in 2013.

The Vatican said the 84-year-old pope had been diagnosed with “symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon,” a reference to a narrowing in the large intestine.

The surgery was to be performed by Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the director of Gemelli’s digestive surgery department.

In 2014, a year after he was elected pope, Francis was forced to cancel several engagements because of what was believed to be a stomach ailment.
