World leaders take major step to restore and protect forests at COP26.

A pivotal pledge to save and restore our planet’s forests was officially announced on the second day of the COP26 World Leaders Summit in Glasgow.

With that deal came a long list of commitments from public and private sector actors to combat climate change, curb biodiversity destruction and hunger, and to protect indigenous peoples’ rights.

A film narrated by Sir David Attenborough played on the screens at the COP26:

By destroying forests, we are harming biodiversity and our lives

Forests provide fresh water, clean the air we breathe, inspire spiritual value, and provide us with food

Our challenge now must be to halt deforestation and beginning to restore forests.

It is a huge undertaking, and every country will need their own table approach.

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson came to the podium to announce that at least 110 countries representing 85 per cent of the planet’s forests had signed the pivotal COP26 Glasgow Leaders Declaration on Forests and Land Use, committing to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030.

Protecting our forest is not only a course of action for tackling climate change but also for a more prosperous future,” he said.

Boris Johnson highlighted that China, Russia and Brazil have also joined the promise, which he believed could be also a ‘parallel’ opportunity for job creation.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and well as Brazil’s, Jair Bolsonaro, appeared in a pre-recorded message supporting the pledge, among other leaders absent from the COP.

“Signing the Declaration is the easy part.

It is essential that it is implemented now for people and the planet,” UN chief António Guterres urged on his official twitter account, according UN News.

Brazil’s President Bolsonaro: ‘Only God can take me from the presidency’.

President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil claimed in front of his 114,000 fans on Tuesday: ‘only God could remove him from power and expel him from the country‘.

Bolsonaro has launched new attacks on Congress and the Supreme Court, claiming that these institutions are pursuing him and his political friends.

The Brazilian president is currently the subject of many investigations, which were just approved by the court.

Meanwhile, his approval rating continues to fall, with 61 percent of Brazilians judging his government’s performance as poor or extremely poor, according to a poll conducted by Atlas Institute.

When he first entered office in January 2019, his approval rating was only 23 percent.

Last week, he told Christian groups that he has three options for his future: ‘being arrested, dead, or victorious‘.

Evangelical leaders are some of Bolsonaro’s most fanatic supporters.

On Brazil’s Independence Day, protesters gathered in the streets to support the country’s president, while others demonstrated against him.

Protests across Brazil as President Jair Bolsonaro is investigated for corruption over COVID-19 vaccines.

Protests against President Jair Bolsonaro have spread across Brazil, after a Supreme Court justice authorised a criminal investigation into his response to allegations of potential corruption involving a vaccine deal.

Demonstrators gathered by the thousands in more than 40 cities to demand Mr Bolsonaro’s impeachment or greater access to vaccines against COVID-19.

Bolsonaro has been accused of not acting on suspicions of wrongdoing after a whistleblower at the Ministry of Health claimed to have personally raised with him concerns about a R$1.6bn ($320m) deal to acquire 20m jabs of Covaxin produced by Bharat Biotech from India.

With more than half a million lives lost to Covid-19 in Latin America’s most populous nation, the controversy has become a political headache for the Bolsonaro administration.

The return of protesters to the streets of Brazil’s big cities raises the pressure on the president ahead of his re-election campaign next year.

Many claim the populist leader, who has railed against lockdowns and disparaged the use of masks, has been negligent in his handling of the pandemic.
